    For most dedicated indoor golf spaces, the right answer starts with the room - not a spec sheet. A beautiful simulator enclosure cannot overcome a launch monitor that needs more ball flight than the space can provide. On the other hand, a compact setup should not force you to settle for data that does not support the way you train.

    How Photometric Launch Monitors Work

    Photometric launch monitors use high-speed cameras to capture the club and ball around impact. Depending on the unit, the cameras may sit overhead, to the side, or in front of the hitting area.     That approach is built for indoor golf. Because a camera-based system sees the crucial moment at impact, it does not require a long stretch of measured ball flight to deliver useful results. You can position the ball closer to the screen without asking the room to become an indoor driving range. Exact requirements vary by unit, software mode, club, and manufacturer recommendations. A room that appears large on paper can feel tight once you account for the golfer, the tee position, the screen, safe swing clearance, and the radar's required tracking window.

    Radar also works differently with spin and club delivery data. Some measurements may be directly tracked, while others may be calculated depending on the model and environment. It generally requires less ball flight, keeps the sensor out of the area behind the golfer, and focuses measurement where every shot begins: impact. That makes it especially practical for basements, garages with limited depth, and multi-use rooms where every foot counts.

    Radar can be the better fit when the space is deep enough and outdoor range use is a priority. A golfer with a large dedicated room or a garage built around full-depth simulator requirements may value the ability to use the same radar unit indoors and outdoors. It is a smart choice when portability and real-flight range sessions carry equal weight with simulator play.

    Neither category wins every comparison. A well-installed radar system in a properly sized room can produce excellent results. A poorly positioned camera system can produce frustrating ones. The right decision is not camera versus radar in the abstract. It is technology matched to your room, your swing goals, and how often you plan to use the system.

    Accuracy Is More Than a Marketing Claim

    Golfers often ask which technology is more accurate. The honest answer is that accuracy depends on the metric, the model, the calibration, and the environment.

    For indoor impact data, photometric systems have a major practical advantage because they directly observe the ball near strike.     Radar's strength is its ability to observe the ball traveling through space. Outdoors, that is a powerful advantage. Indoors, the system has less flight to work with, so the unit may rely more heavily on its indoor processing and setup quality. Modern radar technology has come a long way, but it cannot ignore physics. The available tracking distance still matters.

    Do not judge accuracy by one perfect shot. Hit a purposeful set of shots with several clubs. Look for consistent carry distance, believable shot shape, useful spin behavior, and club data that matches what you feel and see. A launch monitor should help you identify patterns. If every minor miss produces a dramatic, random result, the issue could be the setup, the hitting surface, the ball, the environment, or the monitor itself.

    Space Planning Comes Before Buying

    Before selecting a launch monitor, measure your room with a tape measure, not a guess. Ceiling height gets attention, and it should, but room depth often decides whether radar is practical. Width matters too, especially for left- and right-handed players, a centered screen, and safe driver swings.

    Build the room around four measurements: safe swing clearance, the ball-to-screen distance, the sensor-to-ball distance, and the usable area behind the golfer. Then account for mats, flooring, enclosure depth, projector position, seating, and walkways. The room should feel like a golf space, not a carefully managed obstacle course.

    A complete system is more than launch monitor technology. The screen, impact surface, projector, turf, software, hitting mat, and room layout all influence whether the experience feels professional or improvised. A dozen extra metrics do not help if the monitor does not fit the room or the process slows down every session.
